Innovation actions – flagship (IA-flagship)

  • CERISEA is building a pioneering large-scale, sustainable bio-based chemical production plant to transform waste into valuable products such as plastics, resins, and crop science materials. By using renewable resources, the project aims to reduce emissions, create green jobs, and help Europe lead the way in sustainable chemical production.
  • RUNFASTER4EU establishes an innovative bio-based value chain, transforming underutilised lands into productive biomass sources for sustainable industries. By leveraging advanced biorefinery processes, it converts vegetable oils and residual biomass into high-value bio-based products in a cascading approach, driving industrial-scale sustainability and strengthening the EU’s bioeconomy. 

Innovation actions (IA)

  • ALLIANCE is converting microalgae into eco-friendly, cost-effective ingredients for food, feed, and bio-based chemicals using sustainable biorefineries and advanced technologies.
  • BIOS MATER focuses on developing sustainable, bio-based construction materials that are durable, safe, and environmentally friendly. By innovating production methods and promoting market adoption, it aims to shift Europe’s construction industry to more circular and eco-friendly practices.
  • CERNET works on reducing carbon emissions by converting waste gases, such as CO2 and methane into valuable bio-based chemicals and products. The project will test four sustainable bio-based value chains in Italy, Bulgaria & Slovenia, and Spain, focusing on industries such as cleaning, cosmetics, packaging and food.
  • CleanAlgae2Value is developing a sustainable, scalable process to convert microalgae into high-quality ingredients for food and packaging. The project aims to create a range of carbon-negative products, boosting the circular bioeconomy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
  • ECOFUNC is greening the building and construction sectors by developing bio-based materials for use in panels, insulation, and other building components, reducing environmental impact and costs while driving a greener, circular economy in the EU.  
  • The HIBISCUS project aims to revolutionise the construction industry by developing sustainable, circular bio-based materials, including insulation foam, carpentry, and waterproofing solutions, which reduce carbon emissions, lower costs, and promote local sourcing.
  • INSOIL replaces conventional plastic used in agriculture with sustainable bio-based and biodegradable alternatives. The project is using innovative biopolymers, biodegradation accelerators, and active bioproducts to deliver eco-friendly, cost-effective solutions for crop production and soil health.
  • LIGNOFUN is transforming lignin, a by-product of the paper industry, into sustainable alternatives for fossil-based chemicals, reducing pollution and supporting a greener and more competitive economy.  
  • MULTIPLY is developing algae-based products for use in food, feed, biomaterials, lubricants, and cosmetics, thereby reducing resource consumption and costs while fostering a circular economy in the EU.
  • SOLRESS is developing sustainable bio-based solvents from wood and coffee waste to replace fossil-based chemicals in various industries. Through innovative processes, it aims to boost Europe's circular, zero-waste economy.
  • SOUL is developing biodegradable, bio-based products for agriculture, gardening, and sports that help cut plastic and microplastic pollution, and promote soil health.
  • SPLENDOR is developing sustainable, bio-based aromatic chemicals from lignin, reducing reliance on fossil-based resources, cutting CO2 emissions, and promoting a greener and more competitive circular bioeconomy in Europe.
  • SUSBOARD develops a 100% bio-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive for wood-based materials production. The project will lead to the launch of new sustainable furniture production and help cut the emissions, as well as Europe’s reliance on petrochemical raw materials.
  • The SUSPENSE project aims to develop sustainable, high-performance bio-based adhesives for the wood composites industry, providing cost-effective alternatives to currently used fossil-based products.
  • UNICO2RN transforms industrial production by developing resource efficient, CO2-based solutions for microbial proteins, PHAs and amino acids, reducing energy consumption and emissions, while supporting a circular bio-based economy in the EU. 

 

Research and innovation actions (RIA)

  • BIO4COAT is developing bio-based coatings for a range of industrial sectors, improving resource efficiency, reducing chemical and plastic waste, and supporting Europe’s transition to a more sustainable, competitive and circular economy.
  • BLUECOAT is producing safe and eco-friendly coatings from renewable resources, reducing GHG emissions by 45%, and improving product performance across the maritime, textile and construction industries.
  • CROPSAFE develops innovative and cost-effective bio-based plant pest control solutions as an alternative to chemical pesticides. The project will help increase farm yields, reduce the environmental impact of crop protection and make better use of available biomass.
  • Fabulose is creating sustainable, animal-free leather alternatives made from bio-based materials that are eco-friendly, biodegradable, and high-performing. By replacing traditional leather and plastics, Fabulose is both reducing emissions and waste while also meeting the growing demand for cruelty-free, durable products in fashion, automotive, and furniture industries.
  • WoodTreat is developing innovative solutions to tackle heavily polluted post-consumer wood by creating advanced technologies for efficient sorting, cleaning, and recycling of these materials. The project promotes circular economy practices across industries, transforming waste into valuable resources for eco-friendly product development.
  • MARMADE is developing high-value, bio-based food and feed ingredients from crustacean waste and macroalgae biomass. The project will improve nutritional quality and health benefits, while reducing crustacean waste and the production’s environmental impact.
  • MYCOCIRCLE is developing sustainable, bio-based alternatives to animal-derived products for the cosmetic and agri-food sectors, using mushroom biomass to reduce environmental impact and promote a circular economy.
  • Purple4Life is converting agricultural sidestreams into nutritious, high-value food and feed ingredients while reducing environmental impact, and fostering a circular economy in the EU.
  • WoodVALOR is using waste streams from the construction industry to produce key components for paints, coatings, sealants and adhesives. The project is contributing to reforestation and circular economy across the EU by also recovering metals and minerals.
  • ZELDA is developing bio-based alternatives to chemical pesticides for crop protection sourced from cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. The project helps to tackle the critical challenges of increasing food production and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 

Coordination and support actions (CSA)

  • BIO-INSPIRE strengthens regional bioeconomy clusters in Eastern and Southeastern Europe by fostering innovation and collaboration. Its governance roadmap and partnerships with advanced clusters enables regions to overcome barriers, drive sustainable bio-based growth and foster resilient local economies across the widening regions of Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
  • BIOECONOMY GIANTS creates value from the biomass by developing new cooperation models between primary producers and bio-based industries, improving efficiency, and driving a more inclusive, resource efficient value chain.
  • RootLinks empowers European primary producers to take a more active role in the circular bioeconomy by improving access to knowledge, training and funding opportunities. The project fosters collaboration across sectors and allows primary producers to adopt innovative business models. RootLinks is supporting the CBE JU working group on primary producers to ensure their full inclusion in the value chains, boosting bioeconomy in rural and coastal areas.
