New European Bauhaus Academy launched

Publication date:

Today, Commissioner Ivanova launched the CBE JU-funded EU-wide training network to offer new sustainability skills and education across all levels of the construction sector. The new 14 partner NEBA Alliance will support Europe's construction industry with training services, curricula, and programmes on sustainable building solutions, including bio-based materials and practices.

‘I am looking forward to the important work of the NEBA Alliance in greening Europe’s construction sector with bio-based solutions and practices. Access to state-of-the-art education and training is key to unlocking the potential of highly skilled jobs and economic growth opportunities offered by the bio-based sector, and to reach the EU’s ambitious climate goals,’ said Nicoló Giacomuzzi-Moore, CBE JU Executive Director, on the occasion.

The New European Bauhaus is coming alive in neighbourhoods across Europe. The NEB Academy will play a crucial role supporting the pact for skills. I want to express my gratitude to the CBE JU, whose support was essential to the launch of the NEB Academy.

Iliana Ivanova, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth

‘Providing training for actors all across the construction ecosystem, and spread all around Europe, will help increase the use of bio-materials and ensure more people have access to healthy, beautiful buildings for work, living, and learning,’ added Dr. Andreja Kutnar, NEBA Alliance coordinator.

Training network to green Europe’s construction sector

A large part of European greenhouse gas emissions stems from the construction sector. To achieve the EU's ambitious climate goals, the European Green Deal calls on the sector to reduce these emissions by 60% by 2030. Europe must thus tap into the vast potential of using innovative bio-based solutions in construction. The lack of skills and knowledge about these innovative solutions in the construction ecosystem is, however, one of the major obstacles to this green transition.

Access to state-of-the-art education and training is key to unlocking the potential of highly skilled jobs and economic growth opportunities offered by the bio-based sector.

Nicoló Giacomuzzi-Moore, CBE JU Executive Director

Over the next two years, the NEBA Alliance will develop an international alliance of educational actors and training providers, which will connect five local and regional hubs across Europe. These hubs will offer tailored and high-quality co-created training services, curricula, and programmes on sustainable construction solutions via a digital platform. To ensure consolidation, growth and greater coverage both across and beyond Europe, the Alliance will call for new regional NEBA and satellite hubs to join in and contribute with training content.

Providing training for the construction ecosystem will help increase the use of bio-materials and ensure more people have access to healthy and beautiful buildings.

Dr. Andreja Kutnar, NEBA Alliance coordinator

The NEBA Alliance, led by the Slovenian University of Primorska, is composed of 14 partners from Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands. Its expertise covers a large part of Europe, which will facilitate the take-up by both regional and national construction sectors. The alliance includes academic entities, research centres, public bodies, and European networks.

Background

The New European Bauhaus Academy (NEBA) is a flagship initiative of the 2023 European Year of Skills. It received €1 million in CBE JU funding via the HORIZON-JU-CBE-2023-2-S-01 call for proposals ‘CBE JU supporting activities for the New European Bauhaus Academy, a network for re-skilling and upskilling towards a sustainable construction ecosystem’.
