Evita Mārtinsone, a young Latvian scientist, won the EUCYS 2025 bioeconomy prize for her work on sustainable and affordable ultraviolet (UV) radiation protection, using plant oils. As part of the CBE JU-supported prize, the winner will travel to Brussels, to showcase her innovative research to European institutions, policymakers, and stakeholders in the circular bio-based economy.
18-year-old Evita Mārtinsone received the bioeconomy prize at the EUCYS 2025 award ceremony on 19 September in Riga, Latvia.
Presenting my research in this inspiring competition confirmed to me that I have chosen the right path. I would definitely like to continue my career in the biotech and bioengineering field.

Evita is currently in her last school year and will start the university studies in 2026.
Developing green and affordable sunscreen solutions
There is a growing need for safe, natural UV protection products that do not disrupt hormones, harm ecosystems, or increase cancer risk. However, current sunscreen testing methods are expensive and resource-intensive. To address this challenge, Evita investigated plant-based oils, such as rapeseed, linseed, pumpkin seed, hemp seed, and sesame oil, as potential alternatives to synthetic UV filters. Her research employed two approaches: a conventional spectrophotometric method and an innovative, self-developed technique using baker’s yeast growth on Petri dishes under UVA exposure.

The results showed that all tested oils are capable of absorbing UVA radiation. This promising finding suggests a more sustainable and cost-effective future for sunscreen development. The new testing method offers a valuable preliminary screening tool, enabling companies to reduce production costs, optimise resource use, and create more environmentally friendly and consumer-accessible sun protection products.
I am very proud that CBE JU is helping to support emerging talents in biotech and bioengineering like Evita. It is precisely these young innovators who will deliver the bio‑based breakthroughs of tomorrow - improving our everyday lives in more sustainable, accessible ways.

What is EUCYS?
The European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) is an annual event organised by the European Commission to promote scientific excellence among Europe’s youth. It provides a platform for students to compete with their peers at a European level, showcasing their innovative projects.
Since 2016, CBE JU has supported the contest by sponsoring the bioeconomy prize, which rewards projects that use biological raw materials in sustainable, renewable, and innovative ways while fostering scientific research and environmental awareness. The prize includes a visit to the CBE JU Programme Office and EU institutions in Brussels, alongside with meeting important bioeconomy stakeholders.
