The UNLOCK project has developed biodegradable agricultural mulching films using material derived from poultry feathers. The films provide a use for a poultry-industry sidestream while replacing conventional fossil-based polyethylene mulch.
Applied to agricultural soil, the films help limit weed growth and moisture loss. Their biodegradation is also intended to return nitrogen to the soil, linking crop protection with the recovery of nutrients contained in feather-derived material.
