About

The WOODCELL project has developed a paper burger box coated with plastic-free WoodCell™ crystalline cellulose made from lower-quality hardwood and plywood industry sidestreams.

The fibre-based coating provides barriers against grease and oxygen while preserving the mono-material paper structure of the packaging. This supports food protection and makes the box easier to recycle than packaging that combines paper with a conventional plastic layer.

Key benefits

  • Reduces fossil-based plastic use in food packaging
  • Provides high-performance grease and oxygen barriers
  • Supports recyclability through a mono-material paper design

Application

  • Food-service packaging
  • Burger boxes
