About

The BARBARA project developed an injection-moulded PLA food jar containing a chlorophyll-derived green pigment and natural fibres from artichoke pruning waste. The demonstrator combines a bio-based polymer with recovered agricultural materials.

The chlorophyll-derived pigment provides colour, while the artichoke fibres act as reinforcement within the material. The jar demonstrates how bio-based colourants and agricultural sidestreams can be incorporated into food-packaging products.

Key benefits

  • Reduces the use of synthetic pigments & additives
  • Uses agricultural pruning waste
  • Enables food-safe, sustainable packaging

Application

  • Food packaging
