The SWEETWOODS project has demonstrated asphalt containing Lignova® lignin produced from hardwood residues. The lignin is used as a replacement for part of the conventional fossil-based bitumen in road-pavement material.
The lignin-modified asphalt has been used in road pavements across ten countries in Europe and Japan, demonstrating the use of lignin in an established construction-material application.
