Summary

Thanks to the development and implementation of several innovative technologies with a strong focus on the efficient use of energy, water and chemicals, REDYSIGN will thoroughly redesign a ubiquitous, complex, multi-material product, – the fresh meat packaging used by millions of people every day – to make it fully bio-based, smart and recyclable at conventional paper recycling mills.

To achieve this goal, every intermediate product in the packaging – the tray, the barrier coating, the absorbent pad and the transparent film – will be made almost exclusively of wood constituents (fibres, micro/nanofibres, lignin and sugars which have been chemically or enzymatically modified) and integrated with two food quality sensors: one to detect rotting, one to detect breaks in the cold chain.

Two innovations are being implemented to enhance recycling efficiency. The first involves using specific identification markers to sort bio-contaminated products accurately. This improves the overall effectiveness of the recycling process. The second innovation is the utilization of advanced oxidation treatments, which not only sanitize the materials but also reduce energy consumption, making the recycling process more environmentally friendly.

REDYSIGN aims to develop:

  • circular, fibre-based fresh meat packaging to replace non-circular, plastic products – at least one kind of each intermediate product will be validated, and at least one complete packaging solution will be tested;

  • 12 innovative, resource-efficient processes for the production of high-performance, recyclable, wood-based packaging materials;

  • two sensors – one to detect rotting, one to detect breaks in the cold chain – to prevent food spoilage, and an identification marker to improve sorting prior to recycling and strengthen traceability and data management;

  • an efficient process for recycling packaging contaminated with organic waste – to be demonstrated by production of new packaging from the recycled fibres;

  • activities to commercialise and ensure maximum exploitation of the solutions;

  • guidelines for maximising recycling of food-contaminated fibre-based packaging.

  • The production processes developed under REDYSIGN will ensure efficient use of chemicals, water and energy, thereby helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, energy use and material consumption.

  • The design of the packaging components and recycling process will ensure high recycling yields and boost circularity.

  • Creation of the smart, recyclable packaging system will lead to the production of a number of innovative wood-derived packaging materials with novel functionalities, as well as facilitating fresh meat distribution and preventing food waste.

  • The participation of a large Spanish distribution company will pave the way for market uptake of the products in the fresh meat sector and beyond.

  • Exploration of new markets for the products should lead to job creation in the area of processing of bio-based materials.
